Description

What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become fragile and highly prone to breakage due to loss of bone density. Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose minerals, such as calcium, faster than the body can replenish them, leading to a loss of bone thickness (bone mass or density). As a result, bones become thinner and brittle, so that even a minor bump can cause fractures.
Osteoporosis is not arthritis, which leads to problems within joints due to cartilage wear. Instead, osteoporosis is a problem of the bone, and its ability to adequately support the weight of your body.
Osteoporosis is a silent disease. A person may not know he has a problem until he suffers a fracture which may be caused by a minor accident or fall.
Any bone in the body may be affected by osteoporosis but the hip, spine, wrist and pelvis bones tend to be more susceptible to breakage.

Osteoporosis is usually categorized in to two types:

  • Type I is caused by estrogen deficiency in post menopausal women.
  • Type II is also more likely to occur in women but may also occur in men due to ageing and calcium deficiency.

Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis

Exercise:
Light weight resistance exercise and light aerobic exercises like walking and jogging help to prevent osteoporosis.

Nutrition:
Osteoporosis may be prevented and treated by consuming large quantities of calcium in combination with Vitamin D (which helps in the absorption of calcium).
Food items containing caffeine such as. coffee, tea, sodas etc.also decrease calcium absorption, and should be avoided.
